The Savannah Region of Ghana is grappling with a disturbing incident following the death of three suspected robbers during a police operation, with a subsequent arrest of one individual implicated in a substantial theft of GH¢430,000 from two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market. The incident, which occurred on June 29, 2026, began with a coordinated attack by four armed men, allegedly targeting the vendors and resulting in a violent shootout. According to police reports, the suspects were armed with two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun, and an AK-47 assault rifle, indicating a significant level of preparation for a planned robbery. The police deployed the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, supported by the Savannah Regional Police Command and the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, to investigate the situation.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) directed the deployment of the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, stating that the incident required immediate attention and support from the Savannah Regional Police Command. Detective Inspector-General Samuel Awuku, speaking to Adom Online, explained that the suspects were identified as Yacouba Oumar, a 28-year-old suspect arrested at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23, following sustained surveillance by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Kintampo Divisional Police Command. This surveillance was initiated following observed patterns of movement and potential activity by the unit.
The arrested suspect, Yacouba Oumar, admitted to participating in the robbery and identified three alleged accomplices: Yakubu Seidu, alias Baba; Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, alias Addo; and Abduli Buipe, alias Addo. Police officers then conducted a thorough search of the area, discovering a pump-action gun with five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun believed to have been utilized during the robbery. The bodies of the three suspects – Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, and Oumaro Amadu – have been transferred to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, pending further examination.
Furthermore, the police have recovered a pump-action gun with a significant number of live cartridges and a single-barrel gun believed to have been employed during the robbery. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the conspiracy behind the theft. Initial reports indicate that a suspected mastermind, Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, is believed to have contracted the group to carry out the robbery. Investigators are actively pursuing an arrest warrant for him and other individuals suspected to be connected to the GH¢430,000 theft, with efforts underway to locate and apprehend the perpetrator. Land Surveyors have expressed a call for enhanced collaboration and strengthened regulation within the region to improve land management practices, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts and a proactive approach to security.”
