The Volta Regional Coordinator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Mahama Care, has announced a significant expansion of the region’s cancer care program, registering seven patients with varying forms of cancer within the region. This initiative, spearheaded by Mahama Care, underscores a government-backed commitment to improving healthcare access, particularly for vulnerable populations. The announcement was made during a 3rd Volta Regional Coordinating Council meeting held at the Residence Conference Room on Thursday, August 20, 2026. According to Mahama Care, a significant portion of the patients are currently receiving treatment at the Ho Teaching Hospital, while others have been referred to specialized health facilities in Accra and Kumasi. Specifically, one child has been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), while another is receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Furthermore, a child diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma has been referred to Korle Bu for specialized treatment. Ms. Daitey explained that the referrals are part of Mahama Care’s broader mission to ensure that beneficiaries receive appropriate, specialized treatment irrespective of their location. The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a government-supported health intervention, provides financial assistance for serious medical conditions. The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has lauded the Mahama Care program as a vital support for residents struggling with non-communicable diseases. Mr. Gunu stated that the program is alleviating financial burdens on families, enabling them to afford necessary medical treatment. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity within the region, stressing that stability is crucial for attracting investment and promoting economic growth in the Volta Region. The program’s impact is expected to be substantial, potentially transforming the landscape of cancer care within the region. The total number of cancer patients receiving care is currently being tracked and verified, with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund aiming to increase the number of beneficiaries served in the coming months. The initiative also highlights the government’s dedication to prioritizing accessible and quality healthcare services for all residents of the Volta Region. Data collected indicates that the program has already resulted in a demonstrable reduction in waiting times for patients seeking specialized treatment. The program’s success is being closely monitored by the RCC, and further details regarding its impact will be released in the coming weeks. The focus remains on providing comprehensive and timely medical attention to those in need, reflecting a commitment to improving the health and well-being of the Volta Region’s population. The initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the regional’s healthcare needs, demonstrating a proactive approach to combating cancer and other serious illnesses. The program’s success is being evaluated through regular monitoring and assessment, with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund committed to optimizing the program’s effectiveness.”
