The Accra-Tema Motorway and extension project is currently 50 per cent complete, a consultant, Kwabena Bempong, has confirmed. This ambitious undertaking aims to transform the region’s transportation network with a modernized 10-lane dual carriageway, featuring three-lane urban highway sections on either side of the existing Motorway. The project, a 25-year lifespan infrastructure investment, incorporates a significant component of the Tema to Tetteh Quarshie stretch, commencing with a 5.7-km segment from the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, followed by a 2.5-km section from Tesano to the Neoplan Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange.
Mr. Bempong highlighted the implementation of a 10-foot bridge system at strategic locations to alleviate crossing issues. The project’s core structure involves the completion of the sub-structure and super-structure on the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, with work on the retaining walls having been completed. Furthermore, the contractor, Maripoma Enterprise Limited, is currently executing the work on the drainage structures, which represent a substantial portion of the project’s ongoing activities.
Since the Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, last Wednesday inspected the progress at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, the project has seen 10 per cent extra work completed since the initial inspection. The project’s design necessitates the replacement of existing steel bridges in the Motorway, which are over 60 years old, with enhanced structural and hydraulic capacity to withstand future flooding events.
Traffic flow is being managed by the Maripoma Enterprise Limited, and the project is being implemented by the Ghana Highways Authority, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways overseeing the overall coordination. The project is expected to contribute significantly to the nation’s transportation network and aims to improve connectivity between Accra and the surrounding areas. The Minister emphasized the importance of the contractor to maintain a 24-hour pace to meet the project deadline, acknowledging that the initial inspection revealed only 10% of the project’s overall work completed. He urged the contractor to increase activity to meet the projected completion date.
According to a recent report, the project is currently being implemented by the Maripoma Enterprise Limited, and the construction is being completed by the Ministry of Roads and Highways, with the Ghana Highways Authority overseeing the overall project. The project is a major undertaking, with the Minister of Roads and Highways stating that the design requires a 24/7 approach to ensure timely completion of the project, and that delays would have significant consequences for the motoring public.
