The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Norway have issued a united condemnation of Israel’s ongoing plans to construct a significant new settlement within the occupied West Bank, marking a deepening crisis in the region’s political landscape.

On Thursday, the group collectively called Israel’s opening of tenders for over 1,200 housing units under the E1 settlement project ‘unacceptable’ and in violation of the “territorial contiguity of the Palestinian Territories,” a cornerstone of international law.

The statement, coordinated by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, explicitly warns against any participants who fail to retract these plans immediately and halt further expansion of settlements within the West Bank.

Specifically, the group underscored that these developments pose a significant threat to international standing and are actively undermining Israel’s credibility as a reliable partner in peace efforts.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry further emphasized the complete rejection of attempts to entrench the status quo through illegal settlement expansion, citing the ongoing Israeli government’s genocidal war on Gaza as a primary cause.

Canada echoed this sentiment, stating that the plans ‘gravely undermine the prospect of a contiguous Palestinian homeland,’ a position widely supported by numerous international observers.

Israel has already abandoned ‘even the pretence of seeking peace or respecting the will of the international community,’ according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a recent social media post, further intensifying the diplomatic pressure.

The United Nations has also condemned the plans, with the UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reporting that the secretary-general was ‘deeply alarmed by reports of new illegal Israeli settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank,’ including the newly-announced tenders.

Furthermore, the project, slated to include at least 3,400 units, would significantly expand the geographic footprint of Israeli settlements, connecting occupied East Jerusalem to the Maale Adumim settlement area on roughly 12 square kilometers (4.6 square miles) of Palestinian land.

Research from the UN’s humanitarian body indicates that at least 21 countries have condemned the plans at the time, with a significant increase in Palestinian displacement – a trend exacerbated by rising settler attacks and the growth of illegal settlements.

Human Rights Watch reports that more Palestinians were forcibly displaced by settler attacks, demolitions, and evictions in the first four months of 2026 than in all of 2025, highlighting the escalating crisis.

Analysts suggest that the scramble for settlements is linked to Israel’s upcoming elections in October, with a potential shift in political priorities.

This situation underscores the complex and challenging geopolitical dynamics surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with ongoing concerns about the future of the West Bank and the prospects for a two-state solution.
