He is a strategist, party organiser, and veteran political operator whose nickname, General Mosquito, has become almost as famous as his name. But in a social media post that was far removed from the familiar political battlefield, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) offered the public a glimpse of a more personal side of his life. The comments section soon filled with messages such as ‘Incoming president and first lady,’ ‘The incoming first lady is going to do amazing things!’ and ‘First family.’ The reactions may have been playful, but they arrived at a politically interesting moment. Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, 69, has increasingly found himself at the centre of speculation about the NDC’s succession after President John Dramani Mahama. He has declined to rule out a presidential bid, saying he will make his intentions known when the time is right. So, if General Mosquito eventually makes that declaration and goes on to win the NDC nomination and the presidency, who might the woman now being introduced to the public as his possible First Lady be? If you are a politician and you have no ambition, you are in the wrong profession,’ he said recently. A July 2026 Global Info Analytics delegates’ tracking poll put him at the head of the NDC’s emerging flagbearership race, although the poll also showed significant support for other potential contenders and a large undecided bloc. Taken together, however, they form a picture of a politician consciously communicating a particular philosophy: preparation, patience, integrity, listening, experience, and timing. That does not amount to a declaration of a presidential bid. Indeed, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah has specifically rejected suggestions that his nationwide thank-you tour was a covert 2028 campaign, saying it was part of his responsibilities as national chairman.
