The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has announced a significant commitment to address the ongoing impact of the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage by initiating the payment of compensation to victims across the Volta Region. He stated that the government will begin the process before the end of the year, a move driven by President Mahama’s directive to release funds to facilitate these payments, reflecting a deliberate effort to provide redress for those affected. Speaking to Adom News, following a Regional Coordinating Council meeting, Mr. Gunu emphasized the importance of ensuring that all victims are duly compensated, highlighting the government’s commitment to equitable distribution of support. This will significantly improve power supply to the region, with GRIDCo expected to undertake this project, providing a more reliable and independent power supply for the Volta Region. The Minister also announced plans to address persistent power challenges across the region, a priority that will involve significant investment in infrastructure improvements. He revealed plans to expand the Volta Economic Corridor project, aiming to enhance connectivity among key regional hubs, including Ho West, Ho, Agotime-Ziope, Adaklu, and Akatsi North. Furthermore, the government is actively pursuing industrial development, with a strategic investment secured for Volta Textiles Limited, anticipating a resumption of operations and a potential increase in production. The Regional Minister also highlighted the progress in various sectors, citing more than 600 projects undertaken by Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, with a focus on educational initiatives. Specifically, the Volta Economic Corridor project is progressing, with the government aiming to complete several major projects by 2028. Mr. Gunu also disclosed that the government is preparing to construct a proposed Aflao Market, with feasibility studies underway and a right of entry secured. He stated that the government is currently working with the Finance Ministry and the Local Government Ministry to secure financial authorization for the contractor, with a projected budget of $30 million from the Chinese government. The Minister also stated that President Mahama has secured a 30-million-dollar grant from the Chinese government for the Aflao Market project, indicating a significant financial commitment. He also condemned allegations of sexual abuse against an autistic student at BOGISS, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for vulnerable individuals. The Ghana Education Service is actively working to address teacher shortages, while the government is also exploring strategies to improve academic performance through expanded support programs. The Minister also highlighted the commitment to completing the Aflao Market project, which is expected to be completed in eight years. He said the government has advanced plans for the construction of the proposed Aflao Market, with the construction of the necessary infrastructure, and the securing of the right of entry to facilitate its operations. He stated that the government is also focused on the completion of the BOGISS bridge project, with a target completion date of September 2028. He further stated that the government is working with the Ghana Education Service, assemblies, and other stakeholders to address disparities in the distribution of teachers across the region.
