The Ghana Volleyball Federation (GVF) has issued a formal plea for substantially increased governmental support following a remarkable surge in the nation’s volleyball achievements on both regional and continental stages. A delegation led by president George Tettey visited the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, where officials presented a comprehensive overview of the federation’s recent successes and outlined ambitious plans to bolster the sport’s development across the country.
Among the most significant accomplishments, Ghana achieved gold at the CAVB Zone 3 Nations Cup in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, a testament to the team’s consistent performance. The national teams also secured medals at the Africa Youth Beach Cup in Saly, Senegal, and demonstrated silver at the CAVB Zone 3 Beach Volleyball Nations Cup in Badagry, Nigeria. Furthermore, the GVF’s players competed in the Road to Los Angeles 2028 Series and qualifying events for World Championship competitions.
The ministry lauded the federation’s progress, emphasizing the vital role of sport in nurturing the next generation of athletes. Minister Kofi Adams expressed his satisfaction with the GVF’s achievements, stating that increased investment in sports would undoubtedly create more opportunities for young people. He underscored volleyball’s importance as a contributor to national development, highlighting its relative under-attention compared to football.
Adams reiterated the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure, a pledge that reflects a broader vision for the nation’s sporting landscape. He specifically pointed to President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to building 10 mini-stadia with multi-purpose facilities across the country, a significant investment designed to enhance the nation’s sporting capabilities. The minister stressed the government’s dedication to supporting all sporting disciplines, including volleyball, through increased funding and infrastructure development. He urged stakeholders to collaborate effectively in mobilizing resources for the national sports fund, arguing that ‘lesser sports’ could achieve even greater success with sustained investment.
Furthermore, the minister commended the Ghana Police Service’s active recruitment of athletes into its ranks, a commendable initiative, and encouraged other security agencies to adopt similar practices. He also addressed the players, offering encouragement and emphasizing the importance of discipline and perseverance as they continue their pursuit of further success. Adams concluded with a message of confidence, stating, ‘You can reach whatever height you aspire to. Keep listening, stay focused, and continue to soar higher.’
