The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has issued a compelling plea to the government, urging it to wholeheartedly fulfill the promises made during the recent election campaign. He emphasized that citizens are holding the government to a high standard and expect tangible results in their governance, a sentiment he repeatedly stressed during a meeting on the sidelines of the 52nd Conference of The Methodist Church Ghana at St. Paul Cathedral in Tema.

He stated that the government should avoid justifications for current challenges by referencing past administrations’ failures, a position he views as a distraction from the core responsibility of delivering on new commitments. ‘My message to the citizenry is, let us fulfill our obligations as citizens,’ he declared, ‘I also extend this to the government to pay close attention to the promises they made during the campaign. We expect that these promises will be realized.’

Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu highlighted the Church’s crucial role in supporting government efforts to address critical social and economic challenges, particularly the urgent need to create employment opportunities for young people. The Church’s entrepreneurship program, for example, aims to provide young individuals with the resources – including funding, workspace, capital, and tools – necessary to establish and sustain businesses. He acknowledged the government’s efforts to create employment, but cautioned that it couldn’t fulfill all needs alone. ‘The government promises a lot. If you follow the politics of the last few years, for example, the government promised to give employment to a lot of young people. I am sure the government does, but it can’t do everything. And that’s where the Church comes in,’ he said, emphasizing the Church’s commitment to complementing government initiatives.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of civic responsibility and expressed hope that the government would meet citizens’ expectations and honour its commitments to the nation. The Church’s evangelism initiatives remain central to its mission, yet he stressed the need for renewed reconnection with members who have become inactive. He urged ministers and lay leaders to examine the circumstances behind their absence, noting that some members had experienced crises, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which had impacted their participation in church activities. He called for stronger pastoral care to help them reconnect with the Church, stating that the annual conference remains an important feature of Methodist governance, tracing its origins to John Wesley and the early Methodist movement. The Conference, he explained, provides a platform for deliberations on the affairs and future direction of the Church, and determines programmes and priorities for the year, but its fundamental mission remains rooted in Scripture – to evangelise and win souls.

The annual conference, he noted, remains a vital element in Methodist governance, with its origins dating back to John Wesley and the early Methodist movement. He reiterated the importance of the Conference in determining programmes and priorities for the year, ensuring that its mission remains rooted in Scripture.
