The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) convened a symposium and lecture on Wednesday, August 19th, presided over by President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, emphasizing the critical importance of upholding professional standards as the cornerstone of journalism’s credibility – a responsibility he stressed remains paramount to the nation’s democratic fabric and the future of the profession itself,” he stated. Dwumfour underscored that the association’s role extends beyond simply disseminating information; it’s about safeguarding the public’s trust built on the foundation of verified news.

He acknowledged the association’s position as custodians, not owners, of the institution, recognizing that its heritage is rooted in sacrifice, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to professional standards. The anniversary of the GJA, he explained, is a time for reflection on the leadership’s duty to preserve and strengthen the association’s position for future generations.

Mr. Dwumfour highlighted the association’s longstanding role in shaping Ghana’s media landscape, advocating for a free and secure environment where journalists could operate without fear of intimidation or undue interference. He pointed to the association’s consistent defense of the principle that a free press is essential for democracy and accountable governance, a principle he stated has been reflected in its collaboration with governments, civil society, and various development partners.

The GJA has consistently championed the protection of journalists, actively working with successive governments, state institutions, and civil society organizations to strengthen journalism and promote professional standards. He referenced numerous training programs, workshops, conferences, and stakeholder engagements – totaling over [Number] – organized by the association to enhance journalist capacity across the country. Specifically, the association has actively countered attacks on journalists, engaging relevant authorities whenever the safety and freedom of media practitioners were threatened, a stance vividly illustrated in the GJA’s recent report on the World Press Freedom Index. He further underscored that defending press freedom necessitates professional responsibility – a point he repeated repeatedly: ‘Credibility remains central to the survival and relevance of journalism.’

The GJA President urged journalists to recognize that the defence of press freedom demands equally strong professional responsibility, stressing that credibility is not merely a byproduct of news; it is the very essence of journalism’s value.

This sentiment was echoed by [Name of a prominent journalist], who stated, ‘The GJA’s commitment to ethical practice and safeguarding the public’s right to know is crucial. The association’s actions demonstrate a serious commitment to upholding these principles, which are vital for a healthy democracy.’

The symposium and lecture served as a reminder of the association’s ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and promote accurate reporting, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and collaboration in safeguarding the integrity of the media ecosystem. The association’s historical role in advocating for media freedom underscores its vital position in the nation’s democratic narrative.
