George Afriyie, former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president, has voiced significant concerns regarding the tactical direction of the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing that the team’s approach failed to adequately reflect Ghana’s traditional, attacking identity. His assessment, made during a recent interview on Sporty FM, highlights a perceived mismatch between the team’s style and the nation’s footballing heritage. The Black Stars’ performance in the tournament, culminating in a disappointing Round of 32 exit against Colombia, has been heavily scrutinized, and Afriyie’s critique underscores a fundamental difference in philosophy.

Afriyie contends that the defensive approach employed by the team, particularly during the World Cup, deviated significantly from the established tactical framework of Ghana’s footballing tradition. He expressed a deep skepticism regarding the coach’s tactical choices and questioned why the GFA’s technical leadership did not prioritize alignment with Ghana’s established style of play. Specifically, he stated, ‘And exactly what they label the coach is what we witnessed at the World Cup. But you see, a technical director comes in. If you are a Ghana Football Association technical director, who is well-versed with the style of Ghanaian football, a defensive-minded coach doesn’t fit up here.’

He further criticized the team’s reliance on a lone striker, arguing that Ghana’s history has historically emphasized a more attacking system. He pointed to past successes, including the contributions of stars such as Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, Kwadwo Asamoah, and Stephen Appiah, as examples of how a single striker could generate an effective attacking team. He asserted, ‘Look, people will say that Milo came to play one-top. No, playing one-top doesn’t necessarily mean you are playing defensive.’

Afriyie highlighted the composition of the 26-man squad, noting the presence of several wingers and creative players capable of executing a dynamic, expressive style of football. He emphasized that Ghana’s strength lay in its ability to deploy multiple attacking players, a characteristic he believes the current tactical approach lacks. He concluded, ‘And that is what we are noted for. You went to the World Cup with a lot of wingers who like to express themselves. Look at the list of the 26-man squad. It shows that we even went with a minimum defensive-style kind of approach. But that’s your coach,’

The Black Stars’ performance in the World Cup was marred by a concerning two-goal performance against the Lions of Ghana, suggesting a lack of consistent attacking quality despite possessing significant talent. The team’s overall tactical flexibility and the ability to consistently generate multiple attacking opportunities were key factors in their disappointing results. The Black Stars’ strategic approach, as reflected in Afriyie’s assessment, seems to have prioritized defensive solidity over a sustained, attacking presence, a deficiency that significantly impacted their chances of success at the World Cup.

Ghana will now focus on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, seeking to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The controversy surrounding Afriyie’s critique underscores the ongoing debate about Ghana’s tactical evolution and the potential for a shift in the team’s playing style.
