The Minerals Commission has issued a crucial reminder to mining companies operating within Ghana, emphasizing the fundamental requirement that securing mineral rights does not grant them unrestricted authority. Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Emmanuel Kwamena Anyimah, underscored that these licenses are intrinsically linked to specific legal, environmental, and social responsibilities, rather than simply unconditional entitlements. This shift in perspective is a direct response to the Minerals Commission’s expanded role, which extends beyond simply granting and supervising mineral rights – the institution now bears the responsibility for ensuring that mining activities deliver meaningful benefits to the nation while safeguarding the environment and communities. Mr. Anyimah stated that companies holding leases, service licenses, and permits are obligated to adhere to stringent legislation and contractual agreements, regular operational data submission, adherence to health and safety standards, comprehensive environmental safeguards, and timely payment of all legally mandated fees and obligations. He also highlighted the critical need for mining to actively stimulate economic opportunities for Ghanaians, specifically through increased local participation and employment. The Commission identified key areas for greater attention, including bolstering economic growth through enhanced local content frameworks, promoting skills development, encouraging procurement from Ghanaian firms, facilitating equity participation, and investing in technology transfer. Mr. Anyimah stressed that technology transfer should not be viewed as an afterthought, but rather an integral component of ongoing operations to foster sustainable, local expertise. He urged mining companies to establish stronger partnerships with local businesses and deliberately prioritize support for Ghanaian firms, thereby cultivating a competitive capacity to participate in more sophisticated mining segments. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for enhanced internal compliance systems, improved transparency, and strengthened relationships with local communities hosting operations. The Commission reiterated that mining companies must consider these measures as an integral part of their responsibility to the Ghanaian public, rather than a mere regulatory requirement. He assured stakeholders that the Commission will continue to collaborate with the mining industry to improve sector performance while concurrently safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian communities, the environment, and national prosperity. The Minerals Commission has also urged mining companies to treat host communities as vital development partners, engaging with the GJA President and the Nananom community in crucial decision-making processes. Dr. Nana Kwao Adarkwa Bediako III, the Minister of Mines, underscored the importance of ensuring that mining operations are conducted in a way that respects the environment and protects the interests of all stakeholders, reinforcing the Commission’s commitment to sustainable development and balanced growth. The Commission’s aim is to ensure that mining activities support Ghana’s broader development priorities and align with the objectives of the national minerals policy.” , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
