A Nigerian social media influencer, KC Luxury, has been arrested following the seizure of $28 million worth of cocaine destined for the United Kingdom, marking a significant escalation in a burgeoning drug trafficking network. The authorities, spearheaded by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria, seized the illegal substance during a raid at an airport in Lagos on August 3, 2024. KC Luxury, a prominent figure on the platform Instagram, known as ‘KC Luxury’ to his 700,000 followers, was apprehended while he was preparing to depart for Paris, France, the agency stated. The NDLEA alleges that KC Luxury is believed to be the Nigerian ‘arrowhead’ of a sophisticated cartel trafficking cocaine from South America through Nigeria and into Europe and Asia.
The investigation, initiated last week, points to a pattern of international trafficking involving Nigeria as a crucial transit hub. For years, Nigeria has served as a key point of entry for drugs originating in South America, with the UK subsequently becoming a significant destination. The NDLEA revealed that 184.5 kilograms of cocaine was discovered concealed within brown boxes at a courier facility in Lagos, prompting a swift response.
The seizure, which occurred on August 10, 2024, is a direct consequence of intelligence gathered by the agency regarding KC Luxury’s potential involvement in the illicit trade. Officials allege that KC Luxury was part of a larger network known as the ‘global cocaine network,’ and the authorities believe he was instrumental in moving the drug across borders. The agency further indicated that KC Luxury had more than $12,840 in cash – euros, pounds, and naira – hidden within his possessions, along with expensive jewellery, consistent with the expected proceeds of his criminal activity. A second suspect, Lawal Mujab Kehinde, is believed to be a logistics employee connected to the transportation of the cocaine.
The NDLEA is actively pursuing international collaboration with law enforcement agencies in other countries, including the United Kingdom, to apprehend all members of the network. General Buba Marwa, the head of the NDLEA, expressed determination to track KC Luxury and other implicated individuals, stating, ‘We will track you to the departure gates if we must,’ emphasizing the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking.
