The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MOFFA) has significantly intensified its efforts to combat the disturbing practice of mishandling or abusing corpses, a move prompted by a recent directive from the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, focused on safeguarding the dignity and sanctity of the deceased. The directive emphasizes the need to proactively address emerging concerns regarding disrespectful behavior during funerals and ceremonies across the nation.
The impetus for this heightened focus stems from a viral video captured at Asankragua-Sureso in the Western Region, depicting a corpse being set ablaze while it was in state during a funeral. Reports quickly surfaced indicating that some colleagues of the deceased, reportedly a smoker, gathered around the body to perform certain rites when the incident occurred. This observation ignited a crucial discussion within MOFFA regarding the potential for such actions to undermine public trust and respect for the dead.
Executive Director Francis Ennin addressed these concerns during a press conference, stating that MOFFA has been tasked by the Minister of Health to expedite the drafting and implementation of legislation designed to prevent individuals from engaging in behaviors that disrespect or endanger corpses. He emphasized that any action deemed to disturb or violate the dignity of a corpse will be met with the full force of the law.
The proposed measures include a strengthened legal framework for addressing individuals who commit acts that compromise the dignity and sanctity of the dead. MOFFA is considering deploying representatives to regional and district-level funerals to monitor activities, identify incidents, and trace the responsible parties. Specifically, MOFFA intends to trace the families or individuals involved in any violations and take appropriate legal action.
