George Afriyie, former vice-president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has issued a firm pledge to actively obstruct Kurt Okraku’s potential third term as president, signaling a significant challenge to the football governing body’s strategic direction. This stance, articulated in a statement released on Adomonline.com, reflects a deeply rooted opposition to Okraku’s ambition and underscores Afriyie’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Ghanaian football. The situation has ignited considerable debate within the association and among football stakeholders.

Okraku, who first assumed the role of GFA president in 2019, is currently serving his second term, a position contingent upon a 2023 re-election. The current amendment to the GFA’s constitution, approved by the Ordinary Congress in a vote of 91.9% approval, extends the presidential term limit from the traditional two-four-year structure to a three-four-year model. This change, implemented in response to a call from Afriyie, necessitates a new leadership for the association, a prospect Afriyie views as crucial to maintaining the association’s operational stability and strategic alignment.

Afriyie’s opposition isn’t merely about the length of his tenure; he highlights a broader concern regarding the potential for a lack of a suitable leader within the GFA. He has repeatedly voiced his desire for a replacement, suggesting that the current composition of the executive council – a situation that mirrors his own previous challenge to the 2019 election – requires a new approach. His comments directly challenge the decision to re-elect Okraku, emphasizing the need for fresh leadership to ensure the association’s long-term health and future prospects.

Furthermore, Afriyie questioned the rationale behind changing the term limit, citing the Ghana’s Constitution’s restriction on the President’s maximum term of two terms. He added that the Normalisation Committee maintained the presidential term at two terms of four, arguing that this was a deliberate measure to prevent the President from leading for an extended period. This historical context underscores Afriyie’s deliberate attempt to influence the future direction of Ghanaian football.

In a statement delivered to Sporty FM, Afriyie stated, ‘Kurt Okraku’s third term as GFA President will never happen. I want to see a new FA President, and some of us are willing to petition the president of the land [John Mahama].” This declaration reveals a calculated strategy to safeguard the association’s reputation and operational framework. The GFA’s Ordinary Congress, comprising 114 delegates, voted in favor of the proposed constitutional amendment, with six members opposing it, representing a significant portion of the voting bloc. The change has effectively granted the GFA President and Executive Council a maximum of three four-year terms, a structure that allows for a potential for a 12-year tenure.

The alteration to the Executive Council’s composition also saw the elevation of the Women’s Football Representative to Second Vice-President, a move that reflects a commitment to inclusivity within the association. The GFA’s 2023 constitution now mandates a maximum of three four-year terms for the President and executive members, a change that underscores a renewed focus on strategic leadership and long-term stability. The legal and political ramifications of Afriyie’s position are likely to intensify as the GFA navigates this critical juncture in its leadership structure. The situation underscores a potential clash between established tradition and a desire for a fresh perspective, potentially impacting the trajectory of Ghanaian football.”
