A Sunday evening collision at Assin Fosu in the Central Region has resulted in the deaths of two individuals, marking a tragic incident that has raised concerns about road safety in the area. The accident occurred around 7:00 PM when a Scienta vehicle, travelling from Cape Coast, collided head-on with a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus. The initial report indicates that the Scienta vehicle, reportedly attempting to overtake another vehicle, entered the opposite lane, leading to a collision with the MMT bus. The deceased were the driver of the Scienta and one of its passengers, while five other occupants sustained injuries, requiring immediate medical attention at a hospital. The Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, confirmed the collision, stating that the Scienta vehicle had slowed to make a turn when the driver moved into the path of the oncoming bus. The impact caused the bus to veer off the road and crash into the wall of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School, which subsequently collapsed, resulting in three children also struck and injured. According to William Aboagye, the driver of the MMT bus, the collision occurred suddenly as the Scienta vehicle entered the bus’s path. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, with authorities emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance on busy highways where motorists share narrow stretches with pedestrians and other road users. The incident underscores the risk of risky overtaking maneuvers, particularly on routes where drivers must navigate alongside pedestrians and other vehicles. Authorities have reiterated a critical message: motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when overtaking, ensuring the road ahead is sufficiently clear before making such maneuvers. The MTDTD has also cautioned drivers to prioritize safety and to avoid dangerous driving behaviors, especially when operating in high-traffic areas. The total number of fatalities remains at two, and authorities are currently working to determine the exact number of injured individuals. The exact cause of the Scienta vehicle’s attempt to overtake remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest a potential lapse in judgment by the driver. The immediate area has been cordoned off, and a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the damage and identify any contributing factors to the accident. The investigation is expected to continue for several days, with forensic examination of the scene planned. The Central North Region is currently under heightened security measures, with police patrolling the area to prevent further incidents. The immediate area has also been cleared of debris, and the surrounding area is being monitored for potential hazards. The incident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by commuters and drivers in the region. The extent of the damage to the school building is currently being assessed, but it is expected to require considerable repairs. The impact on the local community is deeply concerning, and residents are expressing their concern for the well-being of the injured children. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. The region’s traffic management system is being reviewed to implement measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
