Chanel West Coast’s recent statements regarding hip-hop’s evolution have ignited considerable discussion within the music industry and among fans alike. The rapper, known for her distinctive style and outspoken nature, expresses a growing apprehension about the genre’s trajectory, advocating for a shift towards music that is ‘a little bit more positive’ and ‘classier.’ This sentiment stems from a perceived transformation in hip-hop’s sound, characterized by what she describes as an ‘excessive ‘ratchetness’ – a concerning trend she believes is contributing to a darkening of the genre’s atmosphere. West Coast’s perspective reflects a deliberate attempt to cultivate music that resonates with her own established aesthetic, one deeply rooted in the influence of classic female rappers like Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, and Eve.

Growing up immersed in hip-hop culture from a young age, West Coast’s foundation was shaped by her father’s DJing career in New York City, where she spent her childhood observing him meticulously record vinyl records in clubs. This early exposure instilled a profound love for the genre, but she now expresses a growing concern about its direction. She explicitly stated that she wanted music that was ‘a little bit more positive’ – a sentiment directly contrasting with the perception of hip-hop as being prone to ‘bad girl’ tendencies, a point she explicitly contrasts with her own artistic ambition.

West Coast’s anxieties extend beyond her own creative pursuits. She highlights a troubling example of how rap is influencing young people in harmful ways, specifically concerning the dissemination of potentially dangerous content through online platforms. A particularly alarming instance involved a group of children at a pool near her residence discussing robbery. She voiced her worry about the potential impact of rap’s influence on their perceptions and values, noting a disturbing trend of kids adopting problematic behaviors. West Coast has also reflected on the influence of country music on her musical journey, recognizing a shared aesthetic – a tendency to rhyme and create poetic verses – and leveraging this similarity in her new single, ‘Down to the Filter.’

The song, which premiered recently and has garnered significant attention, demonstrates a deliberate embrace of country influences. West Coast, having initially sampled ‘Need a Favor’ by Jelly Roll, collaborated with Rob Ragosta, a producer, to rewrite the track. Ragosta, recognizing West Coast’s unique vocal tone, saw her version and wanted to collaborate further, leading to a hook development that occurred while West Coast was in a different state. When they ultimately sent the revised song to West Coast, she immediately recognized and embraced the contribution, writing the verses herself, signifying a significant shift in her artistic vision.

Furthermore, West Coast’s lyrical commentary reveals a complex understanding of the genre’s evolution. She acknowledges the genre’s connection to poetry and rhyme, echoing the foundational elements of hip-hop’s history. She acknowledges that rap and country are, in fact, very similar – they share a fundamental quality of rhyming and poetic expression. The transition from rap to country wasn’t a spontaneous occurrence, rather, West Coast realized the two genres share a common thread – a shared appreciation for the art of lyrical storytelling. The success of ‘Down to the Filter’ demonstrates the growing interest in West Coast’s new sound, proving her ability to translate her established aesthetic into a contemporary musical landscape. The music industry and fans alike are watching closely as West Coast continues to shape the trajectory of hip-hop, reflecting a desire to move beyond the darker, more controversial elements of the genre’s past.
