The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully executed a remarkable rescue operation at Waterfalls Junction, along the Kintampo–Tamale Highway, following a serious accident involving a Shacman trailer. The incident, which occurred late Tuesday afternoon, has resulted in the safe extrication of a driver trapped within the vehicle. This significant rescue underscores the GNFS’s dedication to public safety and swift response to emergencies.

The incident began around 4:36 p.m. when a Shacman trailer, registration number GC 3825-19, carrying a substantial load of bottled drinks, was traveling from Kumasi towards Buipe, a key community in the northern region of Ghana. According to initial reports, the trailer was traveling on a relatively well-maintained section of the Kintampo–Tamale Highway, a major thoroughfare connecting the two towns. The driver, details of whom are currently being withheld pending further investigation, was reportedly in the process of making a delivery to a business in Buipe when the accident occurred.

Responding to the distress call received by the Municipal Commander, DOII Twum Prempeh Dominic, the GNFS immediately activated its Emergency Response Protocol (ERP) – specifically, DPT No. FS 498 – and deployed a team of firefighters to the scene. The team, comprised of firefighters operating with a dedicated Training and Preparedness Program (T&P) number, comprised Assistant Station Officer Agyekum Emmanuel, was dispatched to Waterfalls Junction, a strategically important location along the Kintampo–Tamale Highway.

The team’s arrival was met with a significant challenge: a vehicle trapped inside the trailer, effectively isolating the driver. Firefighters immediately began assessing the situation, recognizing the severity of the situation and initiating a rapid response. The immediate priority was to ensure the driver’s safety and to facilitate a swift and safe extraction.

The rescue operation commenced with a coordinated effort involving multiple firefighters, utilizing DPT No. FS 498, a crucial asset in the GNFS’s arsenal. The team worked with focused precision, meticulously examining the vehicle’s interior and exterior to locate the trapped driver. After a prolonged and carefully orchestrated process, firefighters successfully freed the driver, who was extricated from the wreckage with considerable effort. The driver was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and treatment.

The GNFS stated that the rescue operation was completed at approximately 6:27 p.m., concluding the initial phase of the emergency response. The scene was subsequently secured to prevent any further potential hazards, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. While the exact circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation, initial reports suggest a possible mechanical failure or unforeseen road conditions contributed to the incident. The GNFS emphasized that they are committed to a thorough investigation to determine the full extent of the accident and prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident highlights the critical role of the GNFS in safeguarding lives and properties along vital transportation routes, particularly in the northern region of Ghana.

This rescue represents a significant achievement for the GNFS, demonstrating its preparedness and responsiveness to emergency situations. The dedication and expertise of the firefighters involved are deeply appreciated, and their swift action undoubtedly saved a life.

The Kintampo–Tamale Highway, a crucial artery for regional trade and transportation, has been significantly impacted by the accident. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations during their travels, particularly in areas with challenging road conditions.

The GNFS has not yet released any further details regarding the driver’s condition or the accident’s precise cause, acknowledging that a full investigation is underway. Further updates will be provided as they become available. The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of robust emergency response capabilities and the proactive role of the Ghana National Fire Service in maintaining public safety.
