The long-anticipated Nipsey Hussle docuseries, a project initially conceived several years ago, has undergone a significant evolution, with Blacc Sam offering a detailed update on its completion. Sam, a prominent figure in the hip-hop community, explained that the team’s commitment to the project stemmed from a desire to provide a comprehensive and deeply personal account of his brother’s life, rather than a rushed, superficial documentary. Initially, the project faced considerable challenges, with the team prioritizing self-funding and a deliberate, phased approach to content creation. “We got shelved for a while because we didn’t want to sell it to certain individuals and certain companies that were kinda trying to come in and take creative control,” Sam stated. “So, we’ve just been taking a step back and doing it the long way. Self-financing it a hundred thousand at a time.”
This self-financing strategy has resulted in a substantial undertaking, expanding beyond a traditional feature documentary. Sam detailed that the current version comprises approximately eight to nine episodes, drawing extensively from a vast archive assembled over Nipsey’s entire life. “We got footage from everywhere. Footage from things I didn’t even think existed,” he explained. “We have hundreds and hundreds of hours of footage to go through. The archive includes footage from when Nipsey was ‘selling dope’ in his neighborhood, along with moments that demonstrate how his ambitions began changing. Moreover, the family footage may prove just as revealing. Sam added that the series gets into Nipsey’s home life and the birth of his daughter, opening parts of his story that remained largely private even as his public profile grew. That level of access is one reason the project has remained episodic.”
Furthermore, Sam emphasized that the primary focus moving forward is to secure a home for the series, with Netflix being a significant priority. While no distribution deal has been announced, Sam expressed a desire to ensure Nipsey’s story is presented to the widest possible audience. The project’s genesis was a reflection of the family’s desire to prioritize a deeply personal narrative over the speed of production, a commitment that underscores the significance of the archival materials and the family footage that will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the final product. The team is currently working on completing the series, anticipating a five to six-month completion timeline, after which Sam intends to assess the next steps regarding its presentation.
The initial phase of the project involved meticulous documentation of Nipsey’s childhood and the period when he began teaching himself music, with significant footage from before Victory Lap and The Marathon Clothing store. Sam highlighted the archive’s breadth, encompassing footage from Nipsey’s early days of selling drugs in his neighborhood, alongside moments that illustrate his evolving ambitions. The family footage, in particular, is expected to offer valuable insights into Nipsey’s personal experiences and the genesis of his story. Sam stated that the series will continue to be episodic, with the focus remaining on uncovering the complete narrative of Nipsey’s life.
“We’re looking at another five to six months to just finish it,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of this final phase. The family footage may prove just as revealing, and the team is committed to ensuring the story’s accessibility to a wider audience, with Netflix holding a high priority for a distribution deal.
