The Pokuase Timber Market in the Ga North Municipality is experiencing a significant and escalating protest following a Municipal Assembly decision to demolish and relocate the market’s operations. Traders at the market have formally voiced their concerns, demanding a reconsideration of the planned demolition and relocation, citing the potential devastation of their livelihoods and business operations. The dispute stems from a complex set of arguments centering on the land’s allocation and the potential disruption to established businesses in the area. The core of the complaint centers on the assertion that the land the market occupies is not designated state land, despite the availability of alternative state-owned spaces within the vicinity. Traders insist that the existing land is occupied by active construction, rendering it unsuitable for their continued operations. Furthermore, they allege that the demolition is being disproportionately targeted at them, despite the presence of other shops and businesses already operating in the area. Chairman Nana Kyeremateng, speaking to Accra-based UTV, stated that they have been allocated an alternative location and are prepared to consider relocation if the new site proves viable for their business. However, upon inspection, the site was revealed to be a substantial bushland, indicating that construction has already commenced. Nana Kyeremateng emphasized that the traders initially supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election cycle, believing their promises would positively impact their economic stability. “We were in this place when Mahama came to campaign to tell us about the 24-hour economy and other promises, which we believed in,” he lamented. “The MCE came, and we’ve become his enemies, and he wants to sack us and deprive us of our livelihoods,” he added, expressing deep concern. Nana Kyeremateng appealed to Mr. Agwetey Agbo to engage in a dialogue rather than implement a demolition process that could severely disrupt their businesses. “The MCE shouldn’t let the love we have for NDC disappear,” he asserted. The traders are clearly advocating for a fair and transparent process, stressing that any relocation should be meticulously planned and executed to safeguard their economic stability and the future of their businesses. The situation has ignited considerable tension within the Pokuase community, with the traders demanding a reconsideration of the decision and a thorough assessment of the potential consequences for their livelihoods.
