The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has initiated a significant undertaking – the compilation of a national database of shrines, religious sites, and their operators – as a critical component of Ghana’s efforts to preserve and document its rich spiritual and cultural heritage. This initiative, spearheaded by Chief Registrar Baafi Nsiah, underscores the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding traditions and fostering cultural understanding, particularly for future generations.

Speaking at a mass registration, licensing, and sensitisation programme held in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Nsiah detailed the purpose of the database. He asserted that the project will significantly bolster regulatory frameworks, planning, and recognition processes for traditional institutions, including shrines, which hold considerable historical and cultural significance. The Ministry’s objective extends beyond simple documentation; it also identifies potentially valuable shrines for future development into tourist attractions, aiming to promote Ghana’s cultural identity on a wider scale.

Furthermore, Mr. Nsiah emphasized the importance of protecting these spaces and leveraging them as a means to cultivate and disseminate Ghanaian culture and heritage. The exercise is a deliberate response to the growing demand for formalized practices within the healing sector, aiming to ensure the safety and quality of services provided.

The programme, orchestrated by the Trado-Afrikan Faith Healers Association in collaboration with the Ministry and the Traditional Medicine Practice Council, represents a significant step in formalising the traditional healing sector. Dr. Yakubu T. Yusuf, Registrar and CEO of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council, highlighted the registration and licensing exercise as a crucial element of this process, stressing the need to safeguard public health and eliminate fraudulent practices. He warned practitioners against operating without proper authorization, stating that offenders could face significant penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

He cautioned against the practice of operating without valid licenses, emphasizing that the goal is to recognize legitimate practitioners, provide them with legal backing, and ensure that services provided are safe and reliable for the public. The Ministry urged traditional healers to actively participate in the registration exercise to establish a framework for consistent and legitimate practices.

The Ministry also highlighted a concerning trend: the discovery of 24-hour economy-related documents, including blank passports and visa stickers, within the former Ghana Embassy IT officer’s office. This incident raises concerns about potential data security and requires further investigation and appropriate measures to protect sensitive information. The initiative underscores the Ministry’s dedication to preserving Ghana’s heritage while simultaneously addressing potential risks and ensuring the well-being of the public.
