The Greater Accra Region is bracing for a weekend of temporary power interruptions as GridCo, Ghana’s electricity provider, initiates critical repairs on the damaged Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line. The incident, which occurred following a fuel tanker undergoing welding repairs beneath the transmission line, resulted in a substantial explosion, sending a significant portion of the tanker – over 300 meters into the tower – tumbling into the line’s structure. Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, addressed the public, emphasizing that the planned maintenance is a crucial step toward restoring the safety and reliability of the transmission system. ‘These interruptions will be necessary to facilitate the works and ensure the safety and reliability of the transmission system,’ he stated. He further explained that the repairs are vital to prevent further damage and ensure the grid operates safely for the long term.
The GridCo spokesperson acknowledged the potential inconvenience to residents, stressing the importance of patience and understanding. “We understand this will cause temporary disruptions to power supply, and we are working diligently to minimize the impact on our customers,” Dr. Jinapor said. “We are committed to restoring full power to the grid as quickly and safely as possible.”
The repairs are being conducted under strict safety protocols, with GridCo emphasizing the need to avoid encroachment on protected transmission corridors. ‘We must protect these critical transmission corridors to safeguard lives, property, and the reliability of Ghana’s power supply,’ Dr. Jinapor cautioned. ‘Unauthorized activities and encroachment can pose a significant risk to lives and infrastructure,’ he added. The incident has triggered an immediate review of safety measures and the implementation of enhanced monitoring systems.
The GridCo statement also highlighted the potential for increased load on the existing grid, necessitating a coordinated approach to manage demand. ‘The repairs are a significant undertaking, and we are working with our partners to ensure a smooth transition and minimize any impact on consumers,’ explained a GridCo spokesperson. ‘We are actively monitoring grid conditions and adjusting our operations as needed.’
