The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has confirmed the tragic death of another victim following a devastating multiple-vehicle crash at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Nsawam Highway, pushing the total death toll to 12. This marks a significant increase in casualties following the incident, which occurred around 4:00 AM on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
Senior Planning Manager Felix Owusu, speaking at a press briefing, stated that 22 other individuals are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals across Accra and surrounding areas following the crash. The initial confirmation indicates that nineteen of these individuals are being treated at the Asofa Hospital, while three others are at the Achimota Hospital.
The crash, which occurred on the Ofankor–Pokuase stretch of the highway, involved a significant number of vehicles. Nine of these vehicles were tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars, and a tricycle. The vehicles were reportedly involved in a chaotic pile-up when the collision occurred.
According to Mr. Owusu, the NRSA is currently awaiting the full investigation by the police to determine the precise circumstances that triggered the sequence of events leading to the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest a tricycle may have played a crucial role in initiating the chain reaction. ‘We have gathered some initial observations, and it appears that a stationary tricycle, often referred to as ‘aboboyaa,’ may have been the catalyst,’ Mr. Owusu explained. ‘It was observed that one of the tipper trucks, carrying sand, stopped behind it, followed by two Sprinter buses carrying passengers. Another tipper truck then approached at high speed and crashed into the vehicles ahead, setting off the multiple collisions.’
The NRSA emphasized that this account remains preliminary and should not be interpreted as the definitive cause of the crash until the police have completed their investigations. The scene is currently under investigation, and authorities are working to ascertain all contributing factors to the incident. The incident is a serious concern for the region and underscores the ongoing need for heightened road safety measures and vigilance throughout Accra and the surrounding areas.
