Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced the arrest of a Russian citizen over an alleged plot to assassinate an American citizen of Ukrainian origin in Warsaw, Poland. The announcement came after a report detailed a suspected plan to target a prominent figure in the United States, sparking heightened security concerns within the region.
In a Thursday statement, Tusk stated that the suspect was deemed ‘inconvenient to the Putin regime’ and that Polish authorities arrested him on August 7th. He did not provide specific details about the plot’s nature or the target, citing a desire to avoid speculation and maintain a cautious approach.
Tusk emphasized that the incident represents the first known instance of a deliberate attack on a US citizen by a nation considered ‘on the order of Russia’ within the NATO territory of another country. He characterized the situation as a ‘very dangerous signal’, and thanked Poland’s security services for their efforts in preventing the potential execution. The Polish government has stated that the investigation is ongoing and that Polish authorities are working closely with US intelligence agencies.
The reported plot is part of a broader trend of escalating threats from Russia, which has been accused of escalating its military actions against Ukraine, including the killing of critics abroad. Since February 2022, Russia has been locked in a full-scale war with Ukraine, following the invasion of Ukraine and the push towards Kyiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed the conflict on NATO, accusing the alliance of expanding its influence eastward.
Following the initial invasion, European countries have expressed increasing alarm over Russia’s aggressive posture, particularly with Russian military planes repeatedly flying near NATO airspace. Last week, authorities in Germany also identified a quadcopter drone laden with explosives near an airport, though officials haven’t confirmed that it was linked to Russia. US intelligence reports suggest Moscow may have been operating the drone. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas also stated that Moscow was planning ‘false flag’ attacks on infrastructure in the region, using captured Ukrainian drones to ‘frame’ Kyiv.
Authorities in several European countries, including France, Lithuania, and Germany, have broken up plots allegedly attempting to target Russian dissidents and individuals linked to the Ukraine war effort in recent years. Tomasz Siemoniak, a Polish minister overseeing security services, stated that last week’s arrest was carried out in cooperation with US authorities. The incident has raised concerns about potential escalation in the region, and analysts are monitoring developments closely.
Sources indicate that the investigation is being conducted under the guidance of the US government, potentially involving intelligence sharing and operational support. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
