Zambians are preparing to cast their votes in a pivotal election, marking a critical juncture for the nation’s political landscape. With a record of over eight million registered voters, this election represents a significant test of Zambia’s longstanding commitment to democratic principles, though anxieties remain regarding the stability of political freedoms. The outcome will determine the future direction of the country, particularly amidst a complex economic situation characterized by high unemployment and rising living costs.

The presidential contest is a two-horse race, with incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema seeking a second term after a successful economic rebound. However, concerns persist that political freedoms are being increasingly undermined, fueling a palpable sense of unease among voters. Unemployment remains a significant concern for the electorate, and the cost of essential goods and services continues to be a major burden for many Zambians.

President Hichilema, who has served for six years, is betting on job creation and a new infrastructure drive to secure a final five-year term. Brian Mundubile, a former minister in the Patriotic Front (PF) government, who ruled Zambia from 2011 to 2021, is vying for the presidency. Mundubile’s alliance draws support from backers of late President Edgar Lungu, a figure who died over a year ago and remains unburied in South Africa, triggering a protracted dispute between Lungu’s family and Hichilema’s. The contentious burial arrangements have heightened political tensions throughout Zambia.

The election process is set to unfold over 1800 hours, with a significant number of voters lining up before the polls open at 06:00 local time (04:00 GMT). The election is being widely viewed as a barometer of Zambia’s democratic health, with analysts emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and upholding the rule of law.

Among the 14 candidates on the ballot, the contest is largely divided between President Hichilema and his challenger, Brian Mundubile. Mundubile, a former minister in the PF government that governed Zambia from 2011 to 2021, is a familiar figure in Zambian politics. He has a long history of political involvement, and his alliance includes supporters of the late President Lungu. Lungu’s death in 2019 and the subsequent unburial of his remains have intensified political divisions, particularly within Zambia.

Mwiche Nalupumbwe, a 26-year-old voter, stated, “Zambians are frustrated and this election is a 50-50, that is why we are all here early to make the change. I voted for HH because he cares about us. I feel he is offering better solutions to our economic challenges.” He further highlighted the introduction of meal allowances as a benefit, a move that has been met with mixed reactions.

James Phiri, a 29-year-old university student, echoed this sentiment, noting that “Things are better after he re-introduced meal allowances. We are tired of stories about economic progress.” Samuel Chitendwe, a 47-year-old welder and father of four, expressed his preference for Mundubile, stating, “I have just come from firing someone. We are tired of stories about economic progress.” The presidential candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to win outright or face a run-off, a process that must be held within 37 days.
