Rwanda’s expected hosting of Formula 1 in 2030 could create opportunities far beyond the race track. Thousands of visitors, international companies, teams, media organisations and wealthy fans could come to Rwanda, creating demand for accommodation, transport, food, entertainment, technology, tourism and many other services.

For local entrepreneurs, the opportunity is to prepare early, build businesses that can operate normally today, and then scale them when F1 arrives.

1. F1 accommodation booking platform

A local website and WhatsApp service where visitors can find and book hotels, apartments, villas and guesthouses. The business earns a commission on every booking.

2. Serviced apartments

Furnished apartments can be rented to international visitors, companies, journalists and racing teams. Owners can earn normal rental income before 2030 and charge premium rates during F1 week.

A hotel could position itself specifically for international visitors, offering airport transfers, multilingual staff, business facilities and F1 packages.

4. F1 transport company

A dedicated company could move visitors between the airport, hotels, race circuit, restaurants and entertainment venues. It could operate corporate transport services even before 2030.

5. Luxury chauffeur service

VIP visitors will need reliable cars and professional drivers. Entrepreneurs could build a fleet of premium vehicles for executives, celebrities, sponsors and wealthy fans.

6. Car rental business

Visitors may want to explore Kigali and other parts of Rwanda independently. A professional car rental company could provide vehicles for several days or weeks.

7. F1 concierge service

This would be a “we organise everything for you” business. A visitor could use one company to arrange accommodation, transport, restaurants, tourism and entertainment.

The agency could sell complete packages from abroad, including flights, accommodation, race tickets, airport transfers and tourism activities.

9. F1 safari packages

Visitors could combine the race with Rwanda’s tourism attractions, including gorilla trekking, Akagera, Nyungwe and cultural experiences.

10. Rwanda tourism marketplace

A digital platform could allow international visitors to book hotels, restaurants, tours, transport and experiences in one place. F1 would become one of its biggest annual demand drivers.

11. F1 merchandise shop

Local businesses could sell Rwanda-themed F1 clothing, caps, jackets, flags, souvenirs and other products. Online sales could begin years before the race.

12. Rwanda motorsport clothing brand

A local fashion brand could build a “Rwanda racing” identity rather than simply selling F1 souvenirs. It could become an African lifestyle brand around cars, speed and motorsport.

A large public entertainment area could show the races on giant screens with food, music, games and activities for families. Revenue would come from tickets, food, sponsorship and advertising.

14. F1 viewing lounges

Hotels, restaurants and entrepreneurs could create premium spaces where customers watch races in a more comfortable environment. VIP tables and corporate packages could make the business more profitable.

Race week could create demand for parties, concerts, DJ events and late-night entertainment. Kigali’s existing entertainment businesses could create special F1-week programmes.

16. F1 restaurant programme

Restaurants could create special menus and race-week experiences. A restaurant could sell packages combining food, drinks and live race viewing.

17. Corporate F1 hospitality

Banks, telecom companies and large businesses will want to entertain clients during the race. A company could arrange premium race experiences, transport, accommodation and dinners for corporate guests.

A membership club could bring together Rwandan executives, investors and international visitors. It could organise dinners, networking events and private race screenings.

19. F1 Africa Business Summit

Kigali could host a business conference alongside the race, bringing together companies involved in automotive technology, tourism, investment, energy and mobility.

20. F1 media platform

A local media company could start covering Formula 1 and African motorsport well before 2030. Revenue could come from advertising, sponsorship, branded content and subscriptions.

21. F1 WhatsApp information service

Visitors could simply send a WhatsApp message asking where to stay, where to eat, how to get to the circuit or what is happening that evening. Businesses could pay to appear prominently on the service.

22. F1 digital marketplace

This could bring hotels, restaurants, drivers, tour operators, event organisers and other businesses onto one platform. Customers would be able to discover and book services from their phones.

23. F1 advertising marketplace

A company could package advertising space across Kigali, including billboards, digital screens, taxis, buses, hotels and online platforms. International brands would have a single company to deal with.

24. F1 content production company

International brands and companies will need videos, photographs, interviews and social media content. A Kigali production company could provide these services before and during the race.

25. F1 podcast network

Podcasts could discuss races, drivers, African motorsport, cars and the business of Formula 1. The audience could be built years before 2030.

26. F1 YouTube channel

A local channel could produce race previews, analysis, interviews, explainers and documentaries. It could eventually attract advertising and sponsorship.

27. African motorsport news service

Instead of only covering F1, a media company could cover racing across Africa and follow African drivers competing internationally. Rwanda could become the base for the operation.

28. F1 simulator centre

A Kigali entertainment centre could have racing simulators where people experience driving an F1-style car. Corporate competitions and tournaments could provide additional revenue.

29. Sim-racing league

Rwanda could establish organised virtual racing competitions involving young people and professional gamers. Winners could eventually receive opportunities in real motorsport.

A karting facility could introduce children and young adults to motorsport. It could earn money from individual races, memberships, school programmes and corporate events.

31. African driver academy

A local academy could identify talented young drivers and help them progress from karting to professional racing. Sponsorship would be an important part of the model.

32. Motorsport training centre

Rwanda could train drivers, mechanics, engineers, technicians, event managers and other professionals needed by a growing motorsport industry.

33. Automotive exhibition company

A company could organise large car shows featuring new vehicles, electric cars, motorcycles, technology and African automotive businesses.

34. Supercar experience

Visitors could pay to experience premium and high-performance vehicles. The business could offer professional drivers, organised routes and special packages.

35. Automotive photography and video

Car owners, dealers and manufacturers will need high-quality photographs and videos. A specialist studio could serve the growing automotive market.

36. Event equipment rental

F1 will create demand for tents, chairs, stages, sound systems, screens, lighting and other equipment. A local company could rent these to businesses throughout the year.

37. Temporary infrastructure

Race teams, sponsors and event organisers may require temporary offices, hospitality structures, power, internet and other facilities. A specialist company could supply and manage them.

38. F1 catering company

Large numbers of visitors and corporate guests will need food and drinks. A professional catering company could serve teams, media, sponsors and private events.

39. F1 security company

International visitors and VIPs will require professional security. A specialised company could provide private security, crowd management and VIP protection.

40. F1 staffing agency

The race will require temporary workers including receptionists, waiters, drivers, translators, hosts, cleaners and event assistants. A staffing agency could train and supply them.

41. F1 logistics company

Equipment, merchandise and other supplies will have to move around the country. A specialised logistics company could provide warehousing, transportation and delivery.

42. F1 technology company

Businesses could provide Wi-Fi, connectivity, digital ticketing, event apps, payment systems and other technology needed by visitors and organisers.

43. F1 ticketing service

A local ticketing business could help customers purchase race-related tickets and packages. It could also manage access to fan zones and side events.

44. F1 events company

An events company could organise corporate dinners, product launches, viewing parties, concerts and private events throughout F1 week.

45. F1 sponsorship agency

Many Rwandan companies may want to benefit from F1 but may not know how to access the opportunity. An agency could connect them with teams, events, media and international brands.

46. F1 brand activation agency

Sponsors will need more than a logo on a banner. This business would help companies create memorable campaigns, fan experiences, competitions and promotional activities around F1.

47. F1 financial services

Banks and fintech companies could develop services for international visitors, including foreign exchange, international payments, cards and special packages for tourists and businesses.

48. F1 insurance business

Visitors, businesses, vehicles and event organisers will need different types of insurance. Local insurers and brokers could develop special products for the event.

49. F1 property investment

Investors could buy or develop apartments, hotels, commercial spaces and other properties in areas likely to benefit from increased visitor numbers. The properties can generate income long before 2030.

50. Rwanda 2030 super-platform

This could be the biggest opportunity: one digital platform bringing together accommodation, transport, tourism, restaurants, events, shopping, F1 information, advertising and concierge services.

The platform could start operating long before F1 and cover Rwanda’s wider tourism and business ecosystem. When the race arrives, it would already have the audience, business database and customer relationships needed to capture a large share of the new demand.

The bigger opportunity

The key lesson for Rwandan entrepreneurs is that F1 should not be treated as a one-week business opportunity.

The businesses with the greatest potential are those that can start operating today and build customers, assets, technology and relationships before 2030.

A hotel can make money before F1. A transport company can operate before F1. A WhatsApp platform can build its audience before F1. A media company can build its readership before F1. A property investor can earn rent before F1.

Then, when the race arrives, all these businesses get access to a much larger international market.

In other words, the opportunity is not only to sell to F1 visitors in 2030. It is to build the businesses that will be ready for them when they arrive.
