At least one person is reported to have died while several others sustained injuries after a 33-seater matatu collided with the rear of a truck at Mlolongo along Mombasa Road on Monday.
Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke shows the matatu from Enabled Shuttle Sacco with extensive damage to the driver’s side following the collision.
The crash also left maize grains being transported by the truck scattered across a large section of the road, further disrupting traffic in the area.
Onlookers were seen attempting to assist with rescue efforts, while the matatu appeared to have no passengers at the time of the incident.
Triangulation data by Kenyans.co.ke showed a massive traffic buildup along the affected section of Mombasa Road following the crash.
Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes and use diversion points to avoid congestion as efforts to clear the wreckage continue.
Mombasa Road, part of the 461-kilometre Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, has experienced a surge in road accidents in recent days, claiming scores of lives.
On Saturday last week, 17 people were killed on the spot, and 7 others sustained serious injuries at Mlima Kiu in the Salama area of Kilome.
The victims were mostly women who belonged to the St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Parish in Mikindani, Mombasa.
They were traveling to the Subukia Shrine in Nakuru County for National Prayer Day.
On Tuesday, October 5, two more people died in two separate crashes along the Salama-Sultan Hamud stretch, with the incidents occurring a few metres apart and about a kilometre from Salama. With accidents increasing along the road, calls have intensified, particularly from Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., for the government to fast-track the planned dualling of the highway, a project that has been delayed for nearly a decade.
