In Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, Ukrainian citizen Lyubov Rozhanska, who is wanted by Russia, was detained. The woman was detained on October 1 at the airport during a border control check after arriving from Istanbul.
She is currently being held in a pretrial detention center. A court hearing is scheduled for the coming days, after which a decision may be made regarding her future, including her possible extradition to Russia.
In Russia, Rozhanska is accused of child abduction. A criminal case against her was opened back in 2023.
The woman traveled to Kazakhstan to pick up her grandson and hand him over to his father in Ukraine. In March 2025, the Supreme Court of Ukraine ruled that the boy’s place of residence was Odesa.
According to her lawyers, Russia was preparing documents to issue a warrant for Rozhanska’s arrest and to extradite her to Russia. Her defense attorneys warned her about the risks of traveling to Kazakhstan, but she went to Astana anyway.
Kazakhstan is demanding that Russia return its citizens who have been conscripted into the army.
After reports emerged of a possible new wave of mobilization, Russians began actively searching for real estate abroad. Thailand has become one of the most popular destinations. Between January and August 2026, Russian citizens purchased 1,050 properties there for a total of $123.5 million, or 10.4 billion rubles. The number of transactions was 38% higher than during the same period last year.
