Social media content seems to be moving away from the overly coordinated apartment aesthetic that dominated feeds for years. More rooms now mix bold color, vintage finds, newer furniture, and personal pieces that make the space feel lived in rather than staged.
Have apartment feeds started looking a little less beige lately?
One scroll might bring up a bedroom painted in a deep burgundy. The next apartment has vintage frames running halfway up the wall, a striped chair in the corner, and three different lamps instead of one bright ceiling light.
There’s less pressure for everything to match. People seem more interested in creating a room with a point of view.

How Has Maximalism Changed in Apartment Décor?
Maximalism used to bring to mind rooms packed with color, objects, and competing patterns . The version showing up online now feels more edited.
Books might stay out on the coffee table. A wall may hold art collected over several years. Ceramics, records, photographs, and souvenirs are becoming part of the room instead of things that need to be tucked away.
This looser approach to trendy interior design leaves more room for:
The room can have plenty going on without looking chaotic. Some empty space between pieces gives the eye somewhere to rest.
Wallpaper Is Taking Up More Space
The accent wall hasn’t vanished, though wallpaper is showing up in places beyond one wall behind the sofa.
Bedrooms are getting wrapped in pattern, and smaller dining areas are using it to create their own identity inside open-plan spaces. Anyone building an aesthetic bedroom might use wallpaper behind the bed or across the full room to create a stronger visual theme.
Floral and scenic designs work particularly well in rooms that already mix old and new. Chinoiserie wallpaper , with its birds, flowers, branches, and landscape-inspired imagery, adds the kind of detail a plain painted wall simply doesn’t have.
Renters have options here as well. Removable wallpaper makes experimenting with pattern far less permanent.
Matching Furniture Is Losing Some of Its Appeal
Buying the sofa, chair, coffee table, and TV stand from the same collection makes furnishing an apartment straightforward.
It can also make the room feel like page 47 of a catalog.
Mixing old and new has become a bigger part of modern home styling , especially in apartments where one unusual vintage piece can keep the room from feeling too coordinated. A newer sofa might sit beside an old wooden side table, or a modern bed might be paired with artwork found at a flea market.
Secondhand pieces work well because one good find can change a room’s feel without a complete makeover.
How Do You Add Color to an Apartment Beyond the Walls?
Painting one wall used to be the standard answer when a room needed color. People are now spreading it around. Some of the easiest places to bring it in are:
A renter who can’t touch the walls could build an entire room around a rust-colored rug or cobalt curtains instead.
There’s no need to use every color at once. Repeating a shade in two or three places is sometimes enough to make otherwise unrelated furniture feel like it belongs in the same room.
People Are Turning Off the Big Light
Few things change an apartment’s mood faster than good lighting .
One overhead fixture tends to light everything equally. A lamp beside the sofa, another near a bookshelf, and a small light on a side table create pockets of light instead.
Paper shades, warm bulbs, vintage lamps, sconces, and small reading lights are appearing everywhere in apartment makeovers.
They also give people another chance to add personality. A strange little thrift-store lamp might do more for a room’s character than another piece of wall décor.
At night, the difference is obvious.
Rooms Are Looking Collected, Not Coordinated
Some apartments look as if they were furnished in a weekend. Others look as if the person living there has been adding things for years.
Social feeds are showing more of the second kind. A room like this might contain:
None of it has to come from the same store or even the same decade.
A repeated material can tie things together. Maybe several pieces use dark wood, brass, or a similar shade of green. Small connections like these keep the room from feeling random without making it overly coordinated.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Can Renters Follow Décor Trends Without Losing Their Deposit?
Work with things you can take with you. Rugs, curtains, lamps, artwork, freestanding shelves, and removable wall coverings let you change things up without making permanent alterations.
Which Ideas Work Well in a Small Apartment?
Use the walls and lighting before filling more floor space. Mirrors, art, curtains, compact lamps, and wall treatments add character without squeezing another piece of furniture into the room.
Can You Mix Several Apartment Aesthetics?
Yes, though choosing one connecting detail helps. A repeated color, wood tone, metal finish, or fabric can make pieces from very different styles sit comfortably together.
What’s a Cheap Way to Change the Look of a Room?
Swap lamps between rooms, rearrange the furniture, change where the artwork hangs, or take a few objects off a crowded shelf. A trip to a secondhand shop can come later.
How Often Should Apartment Décor Change?
Whenever you’re bored with it or the room stops working for your routine. There’s no reason to redecorate simply because a new aesthetic is suddenly filling your feed.
Are Houseplants Still Showing Up in Apartment Décor?
Plants remain a natural fit for plenty of apartment styles. Grouped pots , trailing plants, and unusual planters give them more visual presence than one lonely plant sitting on a windowsill.
Build an Apartment Aesthetic Around Your Own Taste
A good apartment aesthetic should tell you something about the person living there. Borrow an idea from your feed, mix it with something you already own, and don’t worry if every piece doesn’t belong to the same trend. The rooms people remember have fewer surprises.
