An assault investigation involving Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams has ended without criminal charges. Oakland County prosecutors and Novi Police reviewed an allegation stemming from an August 6 incident before jointly determining there was “no cause to file charges”. The matter was first reported to police in September, and officers were called to Williams’ home on September 10.
Prosecutor spokesperson Jeff Wattrick said investigators reviewed statements and digital evidence connected to the allegation. Authorities also sought additional information from the woman who accused Williams before reaching their decision. “The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office takes all allegations of domestic violence seriously,” Wattrick said in a statement. “While this matter involves a public figure, it was handled with the same consideration as any other.”
Williams denied the allegation through his attorneys. “Mr. Williams unequivocally denies the allegation of domestic violence,” his legal team said, adding that they provided prosecutors with evidence they believed challenged the credibility and circumstances of the claim. His attorneys called the allegation “baseless” and said the receiver remains focused on the Lions’ season.
The decision not to prosecute does not necessarily close the matter from the league’s perspective. NBC Sports noted that the NFL could conduct its own investigation and impose discipline under league policy even without criminal charges. The Lions said they were aware of the situation but declined to comment further. Any NFL review would operate under a separate standard and would not change the prosecutors' decision.
Williams, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, is coming off the most productive season of his career. He finished 2025 with 65 receptions for 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns. Through Detroit’s first three games this season, he has recorded 10 catches for 127 yards.
