Winneba, a town rich in culture and history, owes much of its modern infrastructure and development to the visionary leadership of Hon. Mike Hammah, a former Effutu Member of Parliament. Hon. Hammah’s contributions to Winneba have left an indelible mark, shaping the town into a thriving hub of opportunities and essential services.
The MIHA Educational Trust Fund: Empowering the Needy
One of Hon. Hammah’s most impactful initiatives was the creation of the MIHA Educational Trust Fund, designed to support needy students. As a beneficiary of this fund, I can personally attest to its life-changing impact. The trust fund opened doors for countless individuals, providing access to education and the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Effutu Municipal Water Project
Before the implementation of the Effutu Municipal Water Project, residents of Winneba endured long treks—up to 10 miles (3 hours)—to fetch water for basic needs like bathing and school preparation. Under Hon. Hammah’s leadership, the rehabilitation and expansion of the water system revolutionized daily life, ensuring that every household had access to clean, safe water. This project not only improved health outcomes but also saved valuable time and energy for the people of Winneba.
A Health Infrastructure Revolution
Hon. Mike Hammah’s administration spearheaded the development of critical healthcare facilities, allowing Winneba to boast an impressive array of hospitals and clinics, including:
- Trauma & Specialist Hospital
- Winneba Municipal Hospital
- Coast for Christ Hospital
- Otoo Memorial Hospital
- Klimovic Hospital
- Bethel Maternity Home
- University of Education Clinic
- Winneba Health Centre
- Numerous CHPS compounds (e.g., Ansaful CHPS, New Winneba CHPS, Zongo CHPS, Papa Kow Damptse CHPS, and more)
These healthcare facilities have become lifelines for the community, providing accessible and quality medical care.
Economic Development: Fishing Harbour and Market Complex
Hon. Hammah’s foresight extended to economic development, as seen in the construction of the fishing harbour in Winneba. This project revitalized the local fishing industry, creating jobs and boosting the economy.
He also envisioned a modern market complex at Winneba Roundabout, which, though uncompleted, showcased his ambition for Winneba. The three-storey market design included facilities like a library, police post, nursery, clinic, warehouses, banks, cold stores, supermarkets, shops, and chop bars. This project promised to transform the local economy and elevate Winneba as a regional trading hub.
Transportation: Connecting Winneba to the Nation
To improve mobility and trade, Hon. Hammah proposed a suburban rail service connecting Accra to Kasoa, Winneba, and Madina. This forward-thinking project aimed to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and enhance economic integration within the region.
A Legacy of Vision and Impact
Hon. Mike Hammah’s administration left Winneba with a foundation of modern infrastructure and essential services. While his tenure ended before all his plans could materialize, his vision for Winneba remains a testament to his commitment to the people of Effutu.
His legacy is not only seen in the physical structures and services but also in the opportunities created for individuals like myself. Hon. Mike Hammah proved that leadership, when driven by compassion and vision, can truly transform lives.
Winneba’s bright future is a result of the seeds he planted, and we, the people of Winneba, will forever be grateful for his contributions. 🌟
