President John Dramani Mahama has outlined the bold vision behind the establishment of the Ghana Goldbod, positioning it as a central pillar of his administration’s strategy to reform the gold mining sector and ensure that Ghanaians derive maximum benefits from the nation’s gold resources.
According to President Mahama, the Ghana Goldbod has already begun to yield significant results. In its brief operational period, it has helped sanitize the gold trading sector by promoting transparency, eliminating irregularities, and enhancing accountability. Collaborating with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Ghana’s gold exports generated an impressive $2.7 billion between January and April—a figure projected to rise significantly throughout the year.
But the scope of the Ghana Goldbod extends far beyond trade facilitation. A core part of its future agenda is the rollout of a comprehensive track-and-trace system to ensure that all gold exports are sourced from environmentally sustainable and ethically responsible operations. This move aims to align Ghana’s gold exports with global standards on responsible sourcing.
The Ghana Goldbod is also committed to training artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) in sustainable and responsible mining practices. This initiative is designed to elevate the ASM sector, foster environmental stewardship, and improve economic opportunities within mining communities.
In partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the private sector, the Ghana Goldbod is preparing to reclaim 10,000 hectares of mined-out lands, a massive restoration project that demonstrates the administration’s commitment to environmental renewal and community resilience.
Additionally, steps are being taken to secure London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) certification for Ghana’s gold. This certification will further boost Ghana’s credibility in the international gold market, opening doors to broader trade opportunities and improved market access.
President Mahama affirmed that the Ghana Goldbod is more than a regulatory initiative it is a bold and forward-thinking approach to ensuring long-term value from Ghana’s natural wealth while advancing national development, sustainability, and community empowerment.
