Morocco’s 1-1 draw against Mali has not only revived discussions about the match’s content. It has also highlighted the management of new players by Mohamed Ouahbi, with one name at the center of the criticism: Abdellah Ouazane. The 17-year-old midfielder, who plays for Ajax, remained on the bench during the match played in Tangier.
Over the entire gathering, Ouazane played only 14 minutes. This very limited playing time surprised some supporters and several observers, especially since his first appearance with the Atlas Lions was among the most commented-upon novelties on the roster. Other newcomers were also rarely used: Tawfik Bentayeb accumulated seven minutes and Soufiane El Faouzi six, while Samir El Mourabet did not enter the game.
The criticism is therefore aimed less at a specific action by the young player than at the coach’s decision not to test these profiles further. After a draw, every choice is naturally scrutinized more closely, but it would be premature to conclude that Ouazane has already lost his place in the project. At 17 years old, his integration can also be envisioned over several gatherings, especially in a sector where Morocco has numerous confirmed players.
The next roster will provide more indications of Mohamed Ouahbi’s intentions. If he recalls Ouazane and gradually increases his playing time, this first gathering may appear as an observation phase. Otherwise, questions regarding the management of young dual-nationals and new internationals are likely to return quickly. For the moment, the established fact remains simple: 14 minutes in total and no appearance against Mali.
