On the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakary Yaou Sangaré signed two texts officially establishing diplomatic relations between Niger and two new partners: Kyrgyzstan, in Central Asia, and the Kingdom of Cambodia, in Southeast Asia, on September 26.
Nigerien diplomacy is continuing to diversify its partnerships.
On the sidelines of the proceedings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, H.E. Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, formalized the establishment of diplomatic relations with two Asian countries: Kyrgyzstan and the Kingdom of Cambodia. Kyrgyzstan: a joint communiqué to seal ties With his Kyrgyz counterpart, H.E. Mr. Jeenbek Kulubaev, the head of Nigerien diplomacy signed a joint communiqué officially establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries. During this bilateral meeting, the Kyrgyz minister emphasized the major interest that Bishkek attaches to developing and expanding its partnerships with the states of the African continent, placing Niger at the heart of this dynamic of openness.
At the end of the discussions, the two ministers expressed their shared commitment to bringing mutually beneficial cooperation to fruition and to forging lasting bonds of friendship between Niamey and Bishkek.
Cambodia: a legal framework for cooperation On September 26, 2026, Bakary Yaou Sangaré also met with the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, Mr. Prak Sokhonn. At the end of this bilateral meeting, the two foreign ministers signed a joint agreement on the official establishment of diplomatic relations between Niamey and Phnom Penh. This legal act establishes the framework that is to govern bilateral cooperation and promote mutually beneficial exchanges between the two countries. The two ministers reaffirmed their shared desire to explore new avenues of partnership in several priority areas and to deepen consultation between their countries within multilateral bodies, particularly at the United Nations.
Diplomacy oriented toward new partners These two signatures are in line with Niamey’s stated desire to revitalize its diplomacy and diversify its international partnerships.
