A fatal road accident has occurred around Mau Summit along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, causing a huge traffic jam along the highway.
The incident happened a few minutes after 8:00 am on Sunday, 4 October, and involved three vehicles.
Witnesses at the scene said a pickup driver hit a small private car from behind before losing control and crashing into a lorry parked by the side of the road.
The witnesses alleged that the pickup was speeding, with some claiming that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol. However, the circumstances surrounding the crash had not been independently established.
Footage seen by this publication shows the damaged wreckage of the pick-up and the small car with goods, which were carried in the pick-up, spreading across the road.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the speeding vehicle died at the scene, while three others involved in the accident suffered injuries and have been transferred to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities have since arrived at the scene to assess the situation and open up traffic for other motorists who had been trapped following the accident.
An official statement is expected to follow with the exact number of casualties, if any, and the status of those injured after the accident.
The incident adds to a worrying increase in road crashes recently. On Friday, October 2, 17 people lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash at the Salama area along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Reports indicate that a lorry reportedly lost control after its brakes failed and rammed into several vehicles, including a 14-seater matatu, carrying passengers travelling to Subukia Shrine in Nakuru County for prayers, when it was caught up in the crash.
Following the crash, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) warned motorists against overtaking dangerously, urging them to observe lane discipline while on the road.
According to NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa, the authority has dispatched a crash investigation team to Salama to support the National Police Service (NPS) in establishing the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The multi-agency team will examine the vehicles involved and determine whether they complied with safety requirements.
At the same time, NTSA is conducting a nationwide engagement with motorists, especially those in the matatu sector, to train them in measures to reduce road crashes and enhance safety while on the roads.
