The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has given all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) 30 days to provide land for properly engineered landfill sites.
He says every household will get waste bins as the government steps up efforts to keep waste out of the country’s drains.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s sanitation exercise in Accra, the Minister said existing landfill facilities are not adequately engineered to meet the country’s waste-management needs, hence the need for new ones.
He added that his ministry will work with the assemblies to ensure that efficient and environmentally sound waste-management systems are established across the country.
Mr Ayariga announced that the government intends to end the practice of carrying waste in baskets by ensuring that every household gets two bins, one for solid waste and the other for organic waste.
According to him, providing bins at the household level will improve waste segregation and make waste collection more efficient.
The Minister stressed that tackling sanitation challenges requires cooperation among the government, local authorities, waste-management companies and residents.
