At least five people were killed and at least six others sustained severe injuries as a result of an Israeli airstrike on a residential apartment in western Gaza City. The figures were provided by medics at Al-Shifa Hospital.
As Al Jazeera reports, the strike hit the Al-Asala building in the Rimal district overnight into Saturday. The channel's correspondent, Hani al-Shaer, said residents had not been warned about the attack.
Rimal is one of the most densely populated residential districts in Gaza City. It is also home to thousands of displaced people living in temporary camps. According to the correspondent, the strike was carried out while people were asleep: after the noise of fighter jets intensified, three strikes were heard.

The strike pierced the targeted apartment and damaged the lower floors of the multi-storey building. The fire continued for at least an hour until Palestinian civil defence crews extinguished it.
Rescuers continued searching under the rubble for missing people and the bodies of those killed. According to Al-Shifa Hospital, four women were among the dead, including an elderly Christian woman and her daughter. The injured were taken to hospital, while Israeli drones continued flying over the area during the search operations.
