The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the dismissal of the motion to set up an ad hoc probe into cocaine busts by the Speaker has weakened Parliament’s oversight function.nnHe explained that the Speaker’s decision is viewed as detrimental to parliamentary integrity. The motion, filed by the Minority, aimed to investigate recent drug seizures.nnThe Speaker, Alban Bagbin, rejected the motion, citing it as inadmissible under parliamentary rules. The motion called for an ad hoc committee to investigate significant drug seizures, including the French Customs seizure of 3.9 metric tonnes of cocaine in Dunkirk last September, and the Australian Border Force’s methamphetamine seizure in June. The motion also referenced the Takoradi and Pedu cocaine interceptions in March 2025.nnThe proposed committee would examine the cargo processing and clearance procedures, company involvement, intelligence profiling, and customs strategies. It also sought to assess security systems and investigations.n
