A 37-year-old woman, identified as Rukaya Alhassan, has been found dead in her room at Kasoa 95, a residential area within the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, according to authorities. The incident, discovered by her 11-year-old daughter, has been classified as a suspected suicide by hanging. The discovery occurred on the morning of October 26, 2023, by Fatima Alhassan, the daughter, who reported her mother’s absence and the presence of a hanging garment. The immediate area was quickly secured by neighbors and other residents, who attempted to intervene and rescue Rukaya, but tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased may have been experiencing significant emotional distress.

The investigation is currently being led by the Awutu Senya East Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Nash Nyandey. He stated that observations at the scene raised suspicions of possible foul play, prompting a formal investigation. The Awutu Senya East Municipal Director stated that the investigation is being expanded to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the death. The authorities have taken custody of the body and are actively working to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the incident.

Authorities have confirmed that Rukaya Alhassan was a resident of Kasoa 95 and had been residing with her husband, identified as Abdul Wahab, who is based abroad. The family has reportedly been cooperating with the investigation. The husband, in a statement released by his legal counsel, stated that he had previously expressed concerns regarding his wife’s well-being and had communicated with her about her emotional state. However, the source of this communication is currently being investigated. The 11-year-old daughter, Fatima Alhassan, provided a detailed account of the events, stating that she found her mother hanging from a ceiling fan with a piece of decorative fabric around her neck. She described the scene as terrifying and that she immediately alerted neighbors. The immediate area was secured, and the police were called to the scene. Authorities have confirmed that the deceased was found in a state of apparent distress, and a thorough examination of the room is underway. The investigation is ongoing, with the police focusing on identifying the circumstances that may have led to the woman’s death. Several audio messages exchanged between Rukaya and her husband have also been recovered, suggesting a deepening of their disagreement. The messages, obtained through a search warrant, indicate a tone of escalating conflict and a threat of harm to her life. The audio messages were retrieved from a digital device, and the content reveals that Rukaya had been repeatedly appealing to her husband to return home and to reassure her about their daughter. The husband, in response, reportedly urged her not to take her life and reminded her of their young daughter, further intensifying the situation.

The circumstances surrounding the death are being treated as a potential suicide, but the police are maintaining a cautious approach and are investigating all possible angles. The investigation is being overseen by Detective Inspector Samuel Atta, and the forensic team is meticulously analyzing the scene to determine the exact cause of death. The case has been classified as a high-priority investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
